Quicktime

Importable Formats:

On Mac: .flv, .mov, .mpg, .avi, .mpeg, .dv

On PC: mpg, .avi, .mpeg, .wmv, .asf

Note: An .flv file is a flash video file format. You can produce .flv files with Sorenson squeeze, an additional software package. It will convert your other movie file types into .flv files for Flash.

Embedding or Linking to a Quicktime movie

You will have an option to link or embed the file. A linked file is inside the flash file and must be transferred with it to view the movie. An embedded file is inside of Flash, increasing the file size of the Flash movie.

Settings Dialog box when you Embed:

1. Choose File>Import to Stage.

2. Select the file to import

3. Select to Embed and say ok.

4. Select Import the entire video, for the whole video or choose to edit it if necessary.

5. Select the compression setting for the audience. Flash uses Sorensen Spark Codec.

6. Click finish.

NOTE: Flash cannot display the soundtrack of imported videos, so you will only hear it when you publish the file.

To Select Your Own Compression Settings:
1. From the encoding options of the Video Import Wizard, select Create New Profile from the compression profile drop-down.

Choose:

Bandwidth: download speed of user

Quality: compression=100% best

keyframes: Determines the keyframe interval. The higher the number, the smaller the file size, the larger the interval between keyframes and less data.

High Quality Keyframes: Select this if your are using a Bandwidth value to insure consistent image quality.

Quick Compress: Speeds up compression time, quality suffers.

Scale: reduce dimensions, smaller numbers=smaller file size

Synchronize to Macromedia Flash document frame rate: forces flash to fix to frame rate of video, ideally you should set frame rate equal ahead of time

Number of Video Frames to Encode Per Number of Macromedia Flash Frames: Controls the mapping of frames between the video timeline and the Flash timeline. Normal is 1:1, but you can change the ratio. Ex. 1:2 will make one frame of your video play for every two frames in Flash.

Click next and Save your setting

To Link to A Quicktime Video In Flash

1. Choose File>Import to Stage.

2. Select the file to import

3. Choose Link to external video file and click ok.

Note: Linked files are only viewable when your Flash movie is exported as Quicktime. And set your settings to Flash Player 5 in the publish settings before exporting, because Quicktime 6 only supports Flash 5 functionality.

Publishing

Your publishing options depend upon your platform and if you linked to or embedded the video. See below:

Export on PC:

Embedded: SWF or AVI

Linked: Quicktime or AVI

Export on Mac:

Embedded: SWF or Quicktime Video

Linked: Quicktime or Quicktime Video

To Publish: File>Export>Export Movie (on Mac, on PC use the Publish Settings or use AVI or Quicktime if it is available in this area)

Choose Quicktime Movie from the drop down menu, name your movie and choose a location, and then proceed with the settings in the dialog box that follows.

Settings
Dimension: You can alter the width and height of your movie.

alpha: Controls how the Flash elements are displayed. Copy=Flash stage is opaque, Alpha-Transparent=Flash stage is transparent, Auto=the Flash stage is opaque or transparent depending on stacking order of layers.

Layer: Controls where the Flash track is placed in the exported Quicktime. Auto=follows the layering in movie.

Streaming sound: Lets any sound in Flash be converted to a Quicktime sound track using Quicktime compression.

Controller: This will give you a Quicktime controller. Choose none if you don't want one.

Playback: Controls how the movie will play. Do not use Play Every Frame as it will disable any audio in the Quicktime soundtrack.

File: Flatten (make self-contained) makes a single file with all elements and makes it compatible for Windows and Mac OS.

Exporting out as a Flash SWF with a video controller component

download the following file to get the controller component and directions (file name: video_control.fla)
right click on the file (control-click for Mac) and select to download to your drive.

Macromedia Flash MX:
Issues
http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/f4_digivid.htm

Quicktime export problem.

What does this message mean, "The installed version of QuickTime does not have a handler for this type of Macromedia Flash movie"?

There is a Macromedia Flash Player 6 SWF track being published inside the QuickTime movie. The installed version of QuickTime does not support Macromedia Flash Player 6 (Flash MX can publish QuickTime 5 containing a Flash 4 SWF track. See below for details.)

To resolve the issue change the Macromedia Flash version being published to version 5 or lower.

Note: If Macromedia Flash MX functionality such as embedded video is required, publish in SWF format for playback by Macromedia Flash Player instead of QuickTime.

So, link to the video, do not embed and change to Flash 5 version. Audio will not import with a linked video. Embed will not save as version 5.
