All grouped objects, fonts, and symbols can be broken apart which means that they become what's called "shapes". They have no bounding box (usually blue). They are filled up with little dots visible on screen in Flash when they are selected. They are then editable (you can change the color and shape). But, make sure that you know what you are doing when you are breaking things apart, symbols and fonts are very useful and efficient, only break apart when absolutely need to (usually before something is a symbol).

You can always double click on a symbol to edit it and get to the shape inside which is editable.

To break apart, select the object with the arrow tool and choose Modify>Break Apart
